Hello Readers, this is the first article from my series “Major Attractions of Sri Lanka”. And it’s about Kandy.
Kandy is the 2nd most important city in Sri Lanka after Colombo. It is the Hill Capital and last capital of the ancient kings’ era of Sri Lanka. The city is situated in the middle of central mountainous terrain. The City and the surroundings are filled with archaeological sites and great tourist spots. Mainly to name a few,
- Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa)
- The Bogambara lake
- Royal Botanical Garden in Peradeniya
- Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage
- Bahirawakanda Temple
- Udawattakele Royal Forest Sanctuary
- Wales Park
- Asgiriya Maha Vihara
- Embekka Devalaya
- Gadaladeniya Vihara
- Lankatilaka Vihara
- Hindu Shrines (Vishnu, Natha, Pattini Devala, etc.)
Normally the Climate of Kandy is extremely good all through the Year, temperature averaging 25 °C to 28 °C (76 °F to 82.5 °F). So it means you can visit anytime.
There are lots of different types of accommodation methods one can choose depending on their budget and requirements. Prices ranges from the Budget to Mid-Range to Luxury. And close to the city or up on the mountain with an extraordinary view or River Side, the choice is up to you.
Things to Do:
Kandy is a busy city so lots of things to do all year around, following are some of the things you can do when you are visiting Kandy.
- Kandy Perahera (Is the biggest festival in Kandy which is in August every year)
- Hanthana Mountain Range Hike and Ceylon Tea Museum
- Kandyan Dancing
- Shopping for Gems, Batik, Handicraft Items, Antiques and other
- Boat Ride on the Kandy Lake or Mahaweli River
And many more different stuff according to your choice.
Thousands come here on a daily basis to watch cricket at the International stadium and to Victoria Golf Club where situated in Digana which is just a 45-min drive away from the City. Kandy has everything from banks to cyber cafes, to excellent libraries and bars and restaurants. Locals can even point you in the direction of meditation centers. The regular bus and train services of this extremely central town will connect you to almost anywhere in the island. You can use either public bus services or Three Wheelers (Tuk Tuk) to move around Kandy.
So in conclusion, Kandy is a great place to Travel any time of the year for any type of travelers. All around great hospitality with many places to visit and many things to do. So I recommend anyone to Visit this beautiful city.
